Product inspection for confectionery

From exposed processes and wooden moulds to raw materials with a high risk of contamination, there is a wide variety of sources for contaminants in the confectionery industry. Our metal detectors and X-ray scanners reliably detect and remove contaminants before they can damage machines or endanger consumer safety. In addition, they are able to check the fill level, completeness, weight and integrity of a product.

For decades, Sesotec has specialised in systems for industrial contaminant detection. We provide a technologically perfected range of metal detectors and X-ray systems for the reliable detection and automatic removal of contaminants in confectionery production. These efforts help prevent customer complaints, product recalls and damage to machinery.

Our machines and systems of course comply with the special hygienic requirements of the food industry and meet the prescribed standards for audits.

More detailed information

Why is contaminant detection important in confectionery production?

Chocolate and sweets are exposed to their surroundings when poured into moulds. Raw materials such as nuts and grains often contain contaminants. In many cases, manufacturers use wooden moulds, parts of which can break off. In addition, machines made of stainless steel are subject to wear and can be a source of contamination. Careless staff pose yet another concern. Depending on what type of contamination occurs, the problem may be “only” hygienic. In the worst case, however, contaminants could endanger consumer health. Lawmakers, retailers and customers compel manufacturers to minimise these risks. Certification under BRC and IFC for example, HACCP analyses and audits are all essential. Failure to obtain certification or perform analyses and audits can jeopardise a company’s image and profitability.

What kinds of contaminants could appear in confectionery?

Several examples include:

  • Objects belonging to machine operators
  • Metal slough in conveyor pipes
  • Metal slough from processing machines
  • Machine breakage
  • Small stones in raw materials, e.g. in grains
  • Plastics
  • Glass splinters
  • Wood
  • Organic contaminants

What products in the confectionery industry can be inspected?

Our systems are used to inspect such things as the following:

  • Gummy bears
  • Sweets
  • Chocolate
  • Bars
  • Ice cream
  • Pralines
  • Nut-based nougat spreads
  • Puffs

Where and how do confectionery manufacturers use our machines?

Our metal detectors and X-ray systems are used to inspect incoming goods, to perform a final quality check for outgoing goods, and in various stages of production, such as during the mixture of raw materials, the conveyance of liquid products, moulding (before injection), and before or after packaging.

In addition to contaminant detection, it is possible to check the fill level, completeness and weight of packaged goods using X-ray scanners. Even broken products can be detected and separated out.

As you can see, we support you in all steps of the process – with proven technology that is both effective and economical. We would be happy to advise you. Together with you, we will find the solution that is best suited to your specific need.

How artificial intelligence contributes to sustainable and profitable food processing

Despite the breadth of technology available for foreign object detection, certain types of food products remain difficult to inspect via conventional methods. The reason for this is that some foods have high levels of product effect, which can interfere with metal detection. This white paper examines the phenomenon of product effect, the problems it can cause, and why artificial intelligence offers an innovative and promising solution.
